White fillings – also known as composite fillings after the material they are made of – are designed to have a much more natural-looking appearance than traditional fillings. Traditionally, fillings are made of a metal amalgam which appears silver in colour in the mouth and can cause some patients to feel self-conscious about their smile.
White fillings are able to mimic the appearance of a tooth much more effectively. Not only can we shade match for the natural tooth, but we can easily and skillfully shape the white filling to fit in practically seamlessly with the rest of the tooth and mouth.
We can also use mercury-free fillings (white) to replace older, traditional mercury or metal fillings should you wish to do so. Some patients decide to replace older fillings with white fillings out of necessity or sometimes the older filling may be leaking and they may be concerned about mercury. Other patients look to replace their filling purely for aesthetic reasons. As with all our treatments, we are always looking for ways to help improve our patients’ oral health and smiles and can talk through traditional filling replacements with you at an appointment or consultation.
