In the past, most patients who needed a filling would have been given a metal amalgam filling, which is made using mercury. We now know that mercury in the body should be avoided where possible, especially by those patients who might be chemically sensitive. To help reduce the overall toxicity levels for our patients, we have taken the decision to be a mercury-free dental practice.
As a result, we are able to not only offer our patients alternatives to metal amalgam fillings that are safer and more natural-looking, but we also provide the safe removal of metal amalgam fillings. We advocate and use the SMART amalgam removal technique which is a completely safe and expertly designed removal system for amalgam fillings.
During this treatment, all necessary precautions are taken to keep both the patient and the dental team safe from the potentially toxic vapours from the mercury. These precautions include rubber dam isolation and high-speed suction to help minimise any exposure to mercury vapours. Once the amalgam filling has been safely removed, we will be able to replace it with a beautiful, healthy and entirely natural-looking white filling.
